Abstract

Background: Jaundice in neonates, under certain conditions, requires phototherapy as treatment. Repositioning during phototherapy is an effort to increase the effectiveness of phototherapy. Objective: To determine the effect of repositioning during phototherapy on the degree of jaundice in neonates. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a control group. The Kramer method was used to assess and observe the degree of jaundice in five levels. The sample in this study consisted of 32 neonates selected based on quota sampling and divided into an intervention group (phototherapy with repositioning) at “A” Hospital (pseudonym) in Pekalongan City and a control group (phototherapy without repositioning) at “B” Hospital (pseudonym) in Batang Regency, both of which are adjacent city and regency. The results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney U Test. Results: In the intervention group, there was a significant difference in the degree of jaundice between the pretest (4.37+0.619) and posttest (0.19+0.403) values with a p-value<0.001. In the control group, there was a significant difference in jaundice severity between the pretest (3.94+0.443) and posttest (0.63+0.500) values with a p-value<0.001. Based on the Mann Whitney U Test, there was a significant difference in the degree of jaundice in the difference between the pretest and posttest values between the intervention group and the control group with a p-value <0.001. Conclusion: There is an effect of repositioning during phototherapy on the degree of jaundice in neonates, which can be used as the basis for standard phototherapy procedures in hospitals.
