The Effect of Liquid Organic Fertilizer Concentration and Pruning Time on the Growth and Production of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Plants
Abstract
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an important horticultural commodity in Indonesia, widely consumed and cultivated due to its high economic value. However, its productivity can be increased through cultivation technologies such as the application of liquid organic fertilizer and pruning techniques. This study aimed to determine the effect of rabbit urine concentration and pruning time on the growth and production of tomato plants, as well as to determine the interaction between the two treatments. The study was arranged as a factorial randomized block design (RBD) consisting of two factors. The first factor was the concentration of rabbit urine: K0 (0 ppm/control), K1 (1500 ppm), K2 (3000 ppm), and K3 (4500 ppm). The second factor was the pruning time: S1 (without pruning), S2 (pruning 15 days after planting), and S3 (pruning 30 days after planting). Each treatment combination was replicated three times, resulting in 36 experimental units. The results showed that the concentration of Liquid Organic Fertilizer significantly affected the number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per fruit, fruit weight per plant, and the length of the longest root. The best treatment was obtained at K2 (3000 ppm), which produced an average number of fruits of 1.62 fruits/plant, fruit weight per fruit of 13.90 grams, fruit weight per plant of 36.99 grams, and the length of the longest root of 29.73 cm. Application of concentration 4500 ppm (K3) actually reduced yields, presumably due to excess nutrients. In contrast, the pruning treatment (S1, S2, S3) did not have a significant effect on all observed parameters. No interaction was found between concentration and pruning time on tomato plant growth and yield. Thus, the use of rabbit urine at a concentration of 3000 ppm without special treatment during pruning is recommended to increase the growth and yield of tomato plants.
