Background: Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires long-term therapy. Medication adherence is one of the key factors in achieving blood pressure control and preventing cardiovascular complications. However, the relationship between medication adherence and blood pressure among hypertensive patients in primary healthcare settings has shown inconsistent findings.
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of medication adherence and blood pressure, as well as to identify demographic factors associated with adherence.
Method: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were collected from May to July 2024 from 194 outpatient hypertensive patients who met the inclusion criteria. The level of medication adherence was measured using the MARS-5 questionnaire, while data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-square test
Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents were aged >60 years, female, had completed senior high school education, were married, and had been living with hypertension for more than 3 years. Most patients had a moderate level of medication adherence, while controlled blood pressure was more frequently observed among patients at Pontang Community Health Center than at Baros Community Health Center. Bivariate analysis showed that the duration of hypertension was significantly associated with the level of medication adherence (p = 0.002), whereas the relationship between medication adherence and blood pressure was not statistically significant (p = 0.077).
Conclusion: This study concluded that the duration of hypertension was associated with medication adherence, whereas blood pressure was not significantly associated with the level of adherence.
