Feeding Response Of (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Pl 20 To Partial Replacement Of Commercial Feed With Fresh Maggot (Hermetia Illucens) Larvae

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the feeding response of vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) at the post- larval stage (PL20) to the administration of natural feed in the form of fresh maggots. The research was exploratory and employed a laboratory-based experimental design. A single treatment was applied : fresh maggots were provided at daily dosage of 20% of body weight, administered three times per day. The experiment was repeated ten times. Data were analyzed descriptiptively. Results showed that L. vannamei exhibited a positive feeding response to maggot supplementation. This was indicated by : (1) immediate acceptance of maggots from the first day, (2) increased pereopod activity observed by the third day as shrimp began carrying maggots, (3) improved feeding behavior over time-initial slow responses on day one transitioned to rapid movement toward the feed on subsequent days. Water quality parameters remained within suitable ranges : temperature 29-20 °C, dissolved oxygen 5.3-6.5mg/L, salinity 31 ppt, pH 7.9-8.0, and ammonia (NH3) 0.2-2.0 mg/L. These findings suggest that fresh maggot larvae are a promising natural feed alternative for L, vannamei PL 20, particularly during early feeding adaptation.
